Mn GLBT Educational Fund Awards
Descriptions of the various Awards
Over the years, several of the awards we have given out have been
sponsored by various people or groups of people. Often these
sponsors have chosen to target their scholarship toward a particular
field or a particular type of student. The following section provides
descriptions of the various awards we have offered over time.
(Note: these descriptions were taken from application materials from
past years. Many of them asked applicants to use Question #7 to give
some information relevant to the specific award.
We no longer ask applicants to do this,
because such information in almost always included in their
answers to other questions, and in their reference letters.)
Dick Hanson Memorial $500 award:
Sponsored in memory of Dick Hanson, a gay DFL activist and farmer from rural
Minnesota, by his friends in the Minnesota DFL party.
(Special consideration given to students from rural areas. In question #7, please explain how living in a
rural area has affected you, how you have been politically active in your area, and explain what you think
you can contribute in the future.)
"Green and Yellow TV" $500 award:
Sponsored by "Green and Yellow TV", Brad Thiessen, Producer.
(Special consideration will be given to youths considering a career in the field of Journalism or media such
as newspaper, radio, TV, film, or video. In question #7, please explain why you are interested in this field
and how you can contribute or have contributed to the community through this field.)
HIV/AIDS Prevention $500 award:
Sponsored by Dr. Gary Remafedi & Mr. Gregg Richwine.
(Special consideration will be given to students who have been involved in AIDS prevention activities. In
question #7, please tell us about your activites in AIDS prevention, and explain why you became involved
in these activities.)
Lutheran Student $500 award:
Sponsored by the Joint Committee on Ministry with Gay-Lesbian Persons--St. Paul &
Minneapolis Area Synods, ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America).
(Eligibility is limited to a Lutheran student, whose legal residence is Minnesota, who is or will be
attending a Lutheran or other college or University. In question #7, please indicate how your
gay/lesbian/bisexual identity and your involvement in the Lutheran church have releated to one another.
Also, please identify your home congregation and any leadership experience you have had in the Lutheran
church and/or gay/lesbian/bisexual organizations.)
MN GLBT Educational Fund Youth $500 & $1000 awards:
(Eligibility is limited to youth attending their first or second year of post-secondary education during the
next academic year.)
MN GLBT Educational Fund $500 President's award:
Sponsored by Board President Paula Lyn Brust, MSE & her partner, Deborah D Wygal, PhD.
(Eligibility is limited to current traditional students of the College of St. Catherine. In question #7,
please tell us about your experiences at St. Catherine's as a lesbian or bi-sexual student. How have these
experiences motivated you to provide leadership in the Gay/Lesbian community?)
Pat McCart Memorial $500 award:
Sponsored by friends of Pat McCart, in honor of her years of work with young people as President of
St. Paul Academy/Summit School.
(Eligibility is limited to a graduating high school senior woman who will be attending a 4-year college or
university, and is planning to major in the Mathematics or Sciences field. In question #7, please explain
why you are interested in this field and how your interest in this field and your female gender have related
to one another.)
St. Catherine's Alumna $500 award:
Sponsored by a network of Lesbian Alumnae; independent of the College.
(Eligibility is limited to students who are or will be attending the College of St.
Catherine in St. Paul. In question #8, please explain why you chose St. Catherine's
and what you can contribute to the St. Catherine's community.)
St. Paul Schools $500 award:
Sponsored by St. Paul School Board member Al Oertwig, and by Gay & Lesbian Teachers and friends in the St. Paul Schools.
(Eligibility is limited to graduates of the St. Paul public school system. In question #7, please tell us
about your experiences in the St. Paul School system and how these experiences have motivated you to
provide leadership in the Gay/Lesbian community.)
Wingspan Ministry $500 award:
Sponsored by the Wingspan Ministry of St. Paul--Reformation Lutheran Church.
(Eligibility is limited to students attending a Lutheran College or University, or to
lutheran students attending any other College or University. In Question #8, please
indicate how your Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual identity your involvement in the Lutheran church
have related to one another. Also please identify your home congregation and any
leadership experience you have had in Lutheran or Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual organizations.)
